With a very talented young team at West Ham you obviously have an eye for a talent, any player/s in the squad that might be under the radar of other managers but you feel could make a name for himself? Of course, we’ve got a great bunch of player that are young here at West Ham United, some of which will be well known by many top managers, of that I’m sure! For me one of our up and coming talents that perhaps isn’t going to be on everyone’s shortlist is probably young Declan Rice! A top professional and a lad with a very, very bright future, and I’m hoping that bright future will be here at the London Stadium.
What area of the squad do you feel is weak and would ideally like to improve? There are always ways in which you can improve your squad, of course I feel we’ve got a decent bunch of lads already here but will look to definitely improve our squad depth and the quality we have in depth. We are in three great competitions that I’d like us to be active in and to do so we need to have a first, second and even a third team I would feel comfortable putting into a game and know I have no real concern. It’s something I’m working on and recently sacrificed Kylian Mbappe to Arsenal in order to improve our depth with the arrivals of Alvaro Morata and Davinson Sanchez. We will be active in the market when we get our funds for the new season, and have already added some brilliant in this post-season.
In regard to results this year, West Ham only managed to pick up 3 points out of a possible 30 in the London derbies, a 4-1 win over Watford, would that be something your targeting next year to try and bridge the gap? Of course, everyone including our passionate fans want to see us defeat our rivals! We have some great teams here in London, Arsenal and Chelsea have particularly strong sides and will be hard to break down but not impossible to beat. We know where we want to be in comparison with other clubs in this area and I will do everything in my power to insure that we are up in and amongst it next season, and that our fans can walk into work on a Monday morning with a sense of pride after our derby games.
What is your main aim for the up and coming season? We had quite a poor season las time out, I’m under no illusion that we did well, despite getting to a cup final. We simply must do better! Of course, we had a number of new players last season and made changes to our squad late compared to those around us. We’ve got a squad now that I feel with maybe two or three new additions will 100% be in a much better position than we finished this time round. We know where as a club we want and need to be and that is where I want to take this team.
Is the cups something you want to concentrate on or is the league position your main priority? A good cup run can help with momentum in the league and of course I’d love some kind of silverware at the club and I’m under no illusion that the league title is a little out of our reach right now but not too far away. Of course, this season we didn’t finish where I would’ve liked in the league and a cup run probably didn’t help with that and the fitness of the players playing a large number of games but silverware and a cup is 100% a priority but so is finishing in the top half of the Premier League so I wouldn’t prioritise one over the other.
Do you see West Ham challenging the top 6 in the near future? Of course! Top six is where we want and should be as a club in the long term, right now a Top ten finish is what we are looking for and perhaps even a Top eight finish would be realistic for the season ahead. As a club we have high aspirations and I’m here for the long haul to insure the club achieves that and being a Hammer myself will always help drive me to succeed at the club I love the most.
