Wigan haven't invested much into a youth team, is that something you are looking to address or do you prefer the older heads? Well I took over a squad of mainly older higher rated players, but since then I have made an effort to bring in a few younger players like Névés, Boye and Neres that will hopefully rise in the future. Over the next couple of seasons I will be bringing in players aged under 30 in an effort to bring the average age of the squad down as my older players retire.
What area of the squad do you feel is weak and would ideally like to improve? I’m fairly happy with my first team, but I feel that I need more strength in depth in case of injuries. I could do with a bit more cover up front for David Villa as well.
After a promising first few months at Wigan as boss, the fans seem to be optimistic about the new season, do you see your long term future at Wigan? Absolutely! I feel that a mid table finish in Division 2 is well within our grasp, with an outside chance of making the playoffs, depending on the amount of investment I receive from the Board. But we are under no illusions that next season will be a tough one, with quality teams already in the division, plus the likes of Swansea, Bournemouth and Middlesbrough, who have come down from Division One. I hope to be in a position to seriously challenge for promotion to the top league within the next three seasons.
What is your main aim for the up and coming season? Consolidation. I’d like to finish around 10th in the league, while also bringing in some younger talent under 30, before some of my older players retire! I would also like to build up my youth team so that I have some risers to replace members of my first team squad over time.
Is the cups something you want to concentrate on or is the league position your main priority? The league is definitely my priority next season. I don’t think that I have a big enough, or good enough squad to compete in the cups as well yet. But who knows? I did get to the quarter finals of the Shield last season, only going out on penalties to Spurs. In the cups anything can happen!
Do you see Wigan causing any upsets next season in Division 2? Possibly. It would be nice to get a result against any of the teams that were relegated from Division One, and also taking six points off the teams that were promoted with me from Div 3!! But the main focus next season is sorting out my squad before most of them leave to go and live in a retirement home!
